The Scoop

Published in 2016, Secret City is a combined edition of the Marmalade Files and Mandarin Code – the novels that inspired the TV series. The front cover gives it away – it’s a screenshot from the opening of the first series when Max Dalgety (played by local actor Timothy Parsons) is pursued across Commonwealth Bridge by two fictional Chinese heavies, eventually deciding to take the plunge into the cold dark waters of Lake Burley Griffin (incidentally, this extraordinary scene was filmed just the once, with divers poised to retrieve Parsons from the water after his mighty plunge. The bridge – which is a main thoroughfare through Canberra’s heart and links the north and south of the city – was closed for four hours to allow the producers to film the scene).
